Relying on the Media – Viewer Beware!

As long-time clients and readers know, we routinely try to explain that contrary to what many believe, the purpose of the media is NOT to educate and inform but rather the purpose is to sell advertising space.

The Trayvon Martin shooting has dominated the news for weeks.  While we still may not know the truth about what happened that night, the fact of the matter is that it was a tragedy that a young man lost his life.  What is also a tragedy is how this issue has been handled and spun by some in the media.

For those relying solely on NBC (the Today Show), the 911 call from that evening was reported as such:

“Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”

The call, as reported by NBC, leaves one with a very distinct impression.  However, it turns out that NBC used some creative editing.  Without the editing, the call was as follows:

“Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.

Dispatcher: OK, and this guy – is he black, white or Hispanic?

Zimmerman: He looks black”

The impression from the actual call is quite different than the impression from the version aired by NBC.  Per Reuters, NBC has apologized for “an error in the production process.”

The next time you rely on the media for your information, think about this and consider the parts of the story that may be missing.
